Bartlesville football overcame adversity to get its first win at Ponca City on Friday night.

The Bruins used good performances on both sides of the ball to handle the Wildcats, 30-20.

Freshman quarterback Michael Kent led the way on offense, in his first extended varsity action at QB Kent appeared unphased in a 14-18 performance for 132 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Ponca (1-7) trailed 16-0 early but made it a game late. The Bruin lead had been trimmed to 16-14 with 10:30 in the fourth when Kent and Sutton Williams subsequently led BHS (1-7) on a 74-yard touchdown drive to retake a nine-point lead.

On the ensuing drive the Bruins went for the knockout blow on this pass to Damien Niko for a score on fourth and short.

It was an onslaught early.

Bartlesville took a 2-0 lead on a sack from Davin Carter, which resulted in a safety.

On the very next drive following a short field after the free kick, Bartlesville got its first touchdown on a freshman-to-freshman connection. Kent to EJ Beisle gave the Bruins their first offensive score in two weeks.

The victory puts BHS in the driver’s seat for fifth place in 6A-II District 2.

The victory also brings back the ConocoPhillips Bowl Trophy to BHS, after Ponca had won two in a row in the series.

Bartlesville will finish the regular season the next two weeks at home against Putnam City West and Capitol Hill.
